My Help is on the Way

I have felt a little beat down by life. No huge battle to describe, no specific struggle, just the ins and outs of life.

Teaching my oldest to read, helping my daughter understand how to express her self appropriately, praying my youngest would be healthy and sleep. All while watching that I eat healthy, exercise, keep house, love my husband, and spend time in God's Word.

Some days go really well, and others just go.

The past two Sundays the worship team at church has lead us in this song. It really speaks to me. When I feel beat down, I need to remember my help is on the way.

Christmas Joy 2011

We had a Very Merry Christmas at the Carnahan Household this year. I think it had to with the pre-planning and simplifying I did before the start of the season. But most of all it had to do with my focus. My heart was truly joyful to share the Good News of the Season with not only my three little ones, but also those around us. So each tradition we completed had at its heart, pointing to our Savior. What else good bring such a Merry Christmas? Here are some highlights in pictures...

El Paso, TX 2011 Trip Highlights

We had a really good visit with Kyle's Family in El Paso the end of November and Beginning of December. It was a great way to spend quality time as a family before we began the Christmas season and closed out 2011. I think my favorite part of the trip, was all the unrushed time we had together. Those moments were not captured by the camera, but they refreshed my heart non the less. Of course we also spent a few days out and about too.

Traveling with Children Tips

We just returned from a trip to see Gram and Poppy in El Paso, TX. We left Thanksgiving night and returned this past Wednesday. It was a great trip with some fun excursions, yummy food, and rest. Just what this momma needed. Today I wanted to share 3 things that made our trip go more smoothly.

Number 1
The Trunki...well 2 to be exact.

One in Purple


and one in Blue

These little rolling suitcases were great! The held a few of the big kids treasured items, a change of clothes, and a blanket. They come with a "leash" so L (5) and E (3) were able to pull them through the airport. They also rode them and pushed along with their feet. The Trunki fits perfectly in the overhead storage on the plane too. I was a little worried the novelty would wear off and I would be dragging these through the airport, but they were a hit! They come in lots of colors and you can get one here.

Number 2

Dried Cranberries Snack Mix

I have always packed snacks for my children when we travel due to overpriced airport food and convenience. This time I really wanted to avoid artificial and high sugar snacks. So I put together dried cranberries and nuts. The kids (and parents) enjoyed it, and I didn't feel like it was a complete waste of calories...even if on the way home I threw in a little chocolate.

Number 3

ebags

I was looking for a way to make the packing, living out of suitcases, repacking, and unpacking easier. So I got online and found ebags. They work just as described and made keeping all the kids clothes organized a breeze. The ebags even made my thankful list. Using these I fit all 3 kids clothes in one large suitcase for a 14 day trip. Also when we arrived at Gram and Poppy's I just put each child's ebag in a drawer and they could still help dress themselves each day like they do at home. Before if they tried to help, clothes were thrown everywhere as they dug through an overstuffed suitcase. I would love a second set to use for the adult clothes too.

So there you have it...3 travel helps for your upcoming Christmas Traveling.

Simple recipes that generate a thank you text from the hubby.

Tortilla chips
2 cans enchilada sauce
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1.25 lb ground turkey, pork, or beef browned with onion
shredded mexican cheese

Just fill a 9 X 13 pan with the chips. Stir the sauce, soup, and meat together. Pour over the chips. Top with cheese. Cover with foil and bake at 350 for 45 minutes. Then uncover and bake 5 - 10 more minutes to let the cheese brown. You can serve with chopped green onions and or sour cream. I have also added a can of black beans too.

Thankful Challenge (Days 1,2, and 3)

I am taking the Thankful Challenge offered over at We are THAT Family. So I will be posting each day of November a reason why I am thankful. There are several reasons why I am setting this as a priority, but I will save you all the details and jump right in with my first three reasons to be thankful.

Reason #1
I am a friend of God. Even when I am struggling to keep my head above water, He calls me friend. Even when I have been short with my children about doing their chores, as my chores sit unfinished...He calls me friend. Even when I am experiencing hurt and confusion in a relationship...He calls me friend. Even as I struggle to get a complete night's sleep...He calls me friend. I am a friend of God, and for that I am so very thankful.

I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. John 15:15

Reason #2

Bright Green Boots with Pink Scottie Dogs...ok really it is the little girl wearing them.

Isn't she beautiful? I love that she is independent and confident enough to rock these boots with her ballet attire. We got to class a few minutes early and I just couldn't help watching her as she laughed and giggled with the little girl in the car next to ours. She was so excited to see her friends. I kept thinking about when she would be old enough to ride up front with me, and have long girl talks.

I love those times with my own mom, which brings us to Reason #3.

Reason #3

My mom. She is an amazing person. I pray I can be as faithful and thoughtful as she is. I just got back from a girls trip with her. It was so much fun just talking and enjoying each others company. Thanks mom!

Happy First Bithday Levi

We had a raoring good time at Levi's first birthday party. Levi has a cute lion toy we planned his party around.

We served finger foods and the traditional cake from Piece of Cake Bakery. It took them 3 hours to decorate the big cake!

We played pin the nose on the lion and had a very cute pull string pinata (that I failed to get a picture of from the front).

I always love seeing each child's reaction to their own little cake placed in front of them, right after being sung to by a room full of people.

Levi had a good time at his party. We were so blessed by all the friends and family that came to celebrate.

He was tuckered out!

Dear Levi,

You are such a special little boy. You take so much in stride, and all the while watching to see just how things work. You love to mimic us, by brushing your hair, talking on the phone, dipping your food. You love to try to put on clothes by yourself, but when we try to change your diaper and get you dressed we have to wrestle you. You love to come sit on my lap, and lean in for kisses. You love cheddar cheese and crackers, and drinking your water from a big boy cup. Your brother and sister love you so much, and we can see in your eyes and smiles the feeling is mutual. God has big plans for you, and we can't wait to see them unfold.

We're Back in the Basement

Well after two intense work weeks we are moving back in the basement. We were so blessed by all the help we received from friends and family. Kyle's dad even came from El Paso, TX to work for two straight weeks. So remember where I left you...

I am still slowly cleaning our things that had been stored in the garage and shed and moving them back to the basement, but we are already enjoying the space. Levi just walks all over the place. He had taken a few steps here and there, but it was like once he had all this open space he took off walking. We still have a little work to do in the learning space, so I will save those pictures for once it is all back together.

It is hard to believe we have already finished 3 weeks of school. I'll leave you with our first day of school pics, better late then never, right?

A SUPER 5th Birthday

In June our oldest, Landon, turned 5. He had been planning his party for a complete year. No kidding here, he loves to socialize and had been planning out the perfect party. His theme changed several times, but he finally landed on Super Heroes. Which was just right for him. He is always in costume as some character and telling me what kind of powers he has. We have always tried to steer away from so much of the newer superhero stuff that has come out and stuck to the classics. So when I saw this party. I knew I had found the perfect inspiration. Here are the pics from our rendition.

Mommy can hardly believe you are 5 years old. We feel so blessed that God chose us to parent you. You live life to the fullest. From the moment your eyes open in the morning to when they finally close at night, you make the most of the time you are given. You have reached an age that sometimes when I look at you I see a teenager begging for the car keys, but then I blink and I remember you toddling around looking for something to climb. God has given you the courage to stand up for what you believe is right. When you heard a song talk about friends telling you the Truth is a lie, you said, "Those aren't good friends." I pray you keep those convictions as you navigate through the years ahead of you. You are teaching me to believe the impossible, learn something new everyday, and love others with your whole life. Daddy and I always prayed you would follow God passionately, and I think He has given you the courage to do just that.

Whooo Turned 3?

Elaine turned three right before the flood. She had such a sweet party. In fact it was a hoot! I had just started seeing all the cute owl decor and thought it would be such a sweet theme for her party. I used my Cricut to make the invitations and ordered the paper goods from Celebrate Express. I got the idea for the cupcakes cake from Family Fun Magazine. It has been almost 3 and 1/2 months since the party but I wanted to share a few pictures and memories.

This is the only picture I got of the front of the super cute pinata!

She had been eying a princess scooter for awhile.

You are just want mommy needed. You are so sweet with your baby brother. Caring for him when I need to attend to something. You have a natural gift for snuggles, putting just enough food on a baby spoon, and watching for dangers Levi might encounter. You love to share Mommy's makeup and perfume. Such a girly girl...but then you have just enough spunk to hang with your big brother too. You want to win the race, swing just as high, cross the monkey bars, and jump from high places. Then you turn around and light up when you get to ballet class where you learn to sit and move like a princess. You are teaching me patience, humility, and fully trusting in God. You are His creation, and He never makes mistakes. I look forward to see how he uses you to bravely go where ever he calls you.

3 Months

Well it is a little over three months since the flood and my last blog post. I have missed blogging about our lives. I have several events I want to post about before I jump into some kind of routine for the blog again. I miss having a record of what happens in our day to day. For now I want to make sure I remember how God has blessed us during our "crisis". I know having a flooded basement is small compared to so much of life's hardships but it really has turned our lives a little upside down. We did most of our day to day living down there.

Here is what the basement looked like when we moved into our house.

Here it is after all the work we had done since moving...I guess since we spent so much time down here I never took an all together picture of how it turned out! So this will have to do.

As you can tell we still have a long way to go, but I want to count the many blessings we have experienced. The outpouring of love as our friends became the hands and feet of Jesus and helped us move all our belongings to dry ground, deconstruct the basement, and then help with reconstruction. Amidst their own very full lives. We were also blessed to have a dry house to move belongings to, and we had belongings to move.

Well I will keep you updated on the basement progress, but in the mean time I have two birthdays, updates from the super smiley 10 month old, and preparations for the upcoming school year to share. So make sure you check back.

Airing Our Dirty Laundry

Well I didn't plan to take a break from blogging, but I guess I needed one. Over the last few weeks I have had so many things I would like to put into writing, but I just couldn't find the time. I was already to jump in yesterday, but when I went to start a load of laundry it all changed. I put one foot into our storage/laundry room and felt a splash. That was just the beginning of a very long day, well probably a few long days. But after two shop vacs, 3 small group guys, 1 step-dad, a husband, a trip to Lowes, a car accident, several trips up the basement stairs, and prayer we seem to be gaining ground on the water situation. Needless to say it will be a few more days before I am back in full swing. Nothing like starting the week by airing out all your dirty laundry!

Daddy and Daughter Date

This past Friday Kyle took Elaine out on the town to see Disney on Ice Princess Wishes. She was so excited.

She got all dressed up (with the help of her stylist, Landon).

Then Daddy came to pick her up, and off they went for dinner at Chic - a - way (ChicFila). Isn't that where all princesses dine?

Then it was off to see the other princesses and eat a really large, expensive Tinker Bell snow cone.

I think this Princess had a blast out with her Daddy.

No worries Mom and the boys did a little shopping and then had a movie night at home. It was complete with candy and popcorn.

Cleaning Out a Closet

I had been planning to do each of the weekly challenges over at Bowl Full of Lemons. I needed a jump start to cleaning out and getting organized, but last week and this week were not really hot spots for me (digital picture files and budget). What I mean is they were areas that are all ready organized, and I have good system in place. I wanted to keep the momentum going so I decided to clean out the kid's bathroom closet. It has been a frustration for me for a while. I am sure you will agree it was time.

Before

I started by taking everything out and giving the shelves a good cleaning.

Then I only put back what we needed to keep. I got rid of old medicine, worn out towels, and never used items. I relocated a few items that just didn't work in the closet or had been put there by mistake.

I found the monkey, brown, and polka dot canvas boxes on sale at Babies R Us. I had the green one from Target and it was not being used anymore. The closet has half shelves and not much can actually fit on them. I decided to put the kids bath pictures on the one they can see when they get out their towels. The door was missing from the closet when we moved in. We eventually want to do a complete overhaul on this bathroom, but we needed a simple solution for now. My mom had the idea to make a cute curtain from matching bath towels. They are just hanging from tension curtain rods.

I am really happy with how it turned out. When we moved in I had a three year old and a one year old. We had to paint almost every room and replace lots of flooring. I was exhausted by the time we were putting our stuff away. So much of the clutter I struggle with is just because things were not put away efficiently to start with. It feels so good to finally get rid of unwanted stuff.

Teaching Tuesday; Calendar Fun Take 2

Last time we talked about using the calendar I hinted about using it to introduce some problem solving and higher level math skills. I would like to share a few of those with you.
The first is to use a week on the calender to create an algebra equation. For example we'll use this calendar.

Today is Monday. So we have two days up and how many are left in this week? The child can count there are 5 days left. So then you can show them 2 days are past and 5 days are left and there are 7 days all together. Then give them the math sentence 2 + 5 = 7. What your child has just done is solve for X, the X being how many days are left. The information they had would look like this in a math sentence 2 + X = 7. From that starting point you can walk them through it another way too. For example ask them, "How many days are in a week?" Then, "How many days have we had?" and finally, "How many are left?" or 7 - 2 = X.

You can also do this with the month rather then the week. For example we have 21 days up and we want to know how many days we have left. It would look like this 21 + X = 28.

When I did this with first graders I used letters that made more since to them then "X". I would use "H" for the days we "had", "L" for the days "left", "W" for "week", and "M" for month. Many of the children loved this activity. Once they could see the pattern I would let them write a math sentence (an equation) for the week or month. Often these are skills you do naturally with your child, but now you can take it a step further. Also you will then see them using math sentences to figure out other answers too. This doesn't have to be over formal or technical, once you get your child started, often they will take the lead.

Amazing Concert

Last night I had a great time at the Renaissance Tour.

If you have the opportunity to check it out, I would. I knew Mark Schultz would be good, but I was overwhelmed at how beautifully David Klinkenberg played. Then Jason Gray's testimony of how God uses our weaknesses, was just what I needed to hear. Also, Mark Schultz just released a new instrumental album and all the proceeds go to help women and orphans, so that is on my gotta get list.

Jason sang More Like Falling in Love, which I have heard on the radio a thousand times. I have always liked the song, but last night when he was singing I just kept thinking, "I hope my kids see me falling in love with Jesus more everyday." I'll leave you with his lyrics:

Siblings and Subway

When Kyle is working on the weekend, the kids and I almost always end up at Subway after church. Yesterday we followed tradition, and I am glad we did. Landon and Elaine had a blast. How does one have a blast at Subway? Let me show you.

First you laugh and bond with your sister while creating funny faces.

Then when Mom is done taking pictures you conspire together to have a contest...a whose mouth is biggest contest to be exact.

Weekly Challenge: Week 4

Yes you are right, I skipped last week. It was a wrapping station and though I could use one from time to time its not a must have right now. So I took last week to do a few odd and ends things around the house that weren't really blog worthy.

This week's challenge was to organize something in your kitchen. I was pumped. We have a "china cabinet type thing" (I am pretty sure that is it's technical name) in our kitchen that was in desperate need of some organizing.

I told you. It was overflowing! So I started by taking everything out, except the china, and cleaning.

Then I only put back what really needed to be there. I found I had lots of new space!

I also had a bag of trash, a bag of things to donate/sell, and a bag of things that belonged elsewhere.

It took some courage to post my disorganization, but I am hopeful it will motivate someone to dive in and clean out. It feels so good! Look how nice it is now.

They are Watching

Today as I was walking through our kitchen I was stopped by this row of shoes.

I have to admit my first thought was, "Why are these shoes not in the shoe basket?" Then I realized the big black shoes had been placed there first and the well worn sneakers and brown Mary Janes had been purposefully lined up right next to the black ones.

See we can tell our children lots of things with our mouths, but their little eyes are watching what we do. So we have to be careful where we walk in our shoes, because we have little ones following right behind.

(In case you were wondering, I completely forgive the wearer of the large black shoes. After all, he left them there last night upon returning from Sonic with a Red Velvet Blast for me. It's the least I could do.)

Orphans - part 2

On Monday I shared that God was showing me ways to love orphans and in turn join in His work. I want to share a few of the things he has laid on my heart.

Right Now
First he reminded me that I am helping care for orphans when I come along side friends who are awaiting the day they will bring their little girl home. They are giving an orphan a forever family. This feels more like a privilege than anything else.

Another way is to sponsor a child through Compassion International or World Vision. Not all of these children are orphans, but often without sponsorship they live like one. We have a little boy we sponsor. God has reminded me its not just about sending money so he can go to school, but also praying for him and writing to him. Letting him know we truly care about him and hope he knows how much God loves him.

Someday Soon
The next few things are next steps for me. The first is one I feel called to act on soon, volunteering at a pregnancy resource center. Now you may be thinking I thought this was about caring for orphans. Well if young mothers are not given good council and support often their babies will become orphans. Then those children will go without the unconditional love parents are meant to provide. Also, we often forget that the young mothers may be orphans themselves. They may have little to no contact with their parents and they need someone to come along side them during this scary time.

The second thing is becoming a Court Appointed Advocate through CASA. This is something that God has laid on my heart off and on for the last few years. This will still be a few years out as I feel my children need to be a little older. Check out this website for more information. These volunteers are so important.

I am not sure where this last one fits in. It is actually going on a short term mission trip to an orphanage. This was laid on my heart after I read Choosing to SEE. Mary Beth talked about holding and comforting a little baby boy who would most likely be in heaven soon. Then when I read my close friend's blog post, it was confirmed. Shawna was praying for someone to comfort her little one, and I am sure other parents are praying a similar prayer. God wants me to go hold babies, and show them what it means to be loved.

Now I wait until my little ones are not quite so little. God is meeting me each step of the way. Even though I don't see how I'll fit one more thing into my days I know when I step out in faith he will bless my small efforts. See God will use my heart for orphans. How does God want to use you?

Teaching Tuesday: Calendar Fun

One of my favorite resources to teach with is the calendar. It is something we take for granted, but children are often fascinated with the calendar. There are so many skills that can be introduced and practiced using the calendar. I am using a classroom calendar set I was given as a gift from my supervising teacher at the end of my student teaching experience in her classroom. I was so excited when I received it because I had been introduced to the beauty of Calendar Time in the classroom of one of my all time favorite teachers. I never sat as a student in her classroom, but she was my brownie leader and I then spent lots of my observation hours for my degree in her classroom and part of my student teaching. You could purchase one of these sets at a Teacher's Supply store or office store (I saw one at Staples this weekend). They also have several on Amazon, here is one example. You can also print a calendar from the computer or make one with poster board and cut out your own shapes for the days. Starfall.com even has an online calendar game.

Each day she would have the students gather around what seemed like a giant calendar for Calendar Time, it was one of their favorite parts of the day. I won't give you every detail, but will highlight a few of the things we did during that time. These are also the skills I have my kiddos practice each day with the calendar.

1. Patterns - The calendar starts blank at the beginning of each month. Then the students put up the next piece as the new day arrived. For example, right now our calendar has the pattern heart, frog, heart, frog, etc. So the kids have to decide what comes next in the pattern.

2. Number order - After the pattern has been determined, they have to find the piece with the correct number. See today would be a heart with the number 22 on it.

3. Then we determine what day of the week it is and say the date together. "Today is Tuesday, February 22, 2011." You can expand this idea by then asking, "What day was yesterday?" or "What day will tomorrow be?"

4. We also place holidays and birthdays on our calendar. Then as the day approaches we can count on to see how many days away the event is, or what day of the week it will occur on.

The repetition is great for young kids and yet they don't realize all the math and practical skills they are learning. Next week I'll show you how to introduce algebra skills with the same type of calendar. The calendar is a great way to have all the kids doing the same activity, but at various levels.

I'm not really sure where to begin this post, and I think that is because it doesn't really have an ending. I have been wrestling with God for some time now over the issue of orphans. See, early in Kyle and I's relationship and especially after we were married we discussed adoption. We know caring for orphans is close to the heart of God, and so it should be close to ours.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:7

So when we struggled to conceive it didn't take much for us to take the steps to begin the adoption process. We prayed about where to adopt from, what agency to use, and then shared the news with our parents. Then we collected the paperwork and information we needed to get our home study started. Set up a nursery in faith that God would soon bless us with a baby. Then we found out I was expecting...in fact I was already 15 weeks along, so just about 6 months after we found out we were expecting, Landon entered our world. Then when he was about 14 months I found out I was expecting again, and 9 months later we had Elaine. Then when she was 14 months I found out I was expecting again, but we lost Baby #3,and in no time we were expecting again. We were blessed with Levi. So now here we are with a 4 year old, a 2 year old, and a 5 month old. God definitely blessed our step of faith to set up a nursery believing He would bring us a baby.

But what do I do with my heart for orphans? Well that is something God is beginning to reveal to me, and so I want to share that with you. It's like he has shown me these steps he wants me to take and if I follow Him, He'll meet me there. So this week I plan to share what God has shown me, and maybe you'll find a practical way to love orphans too. For today I'll leave you with a song God has really used to speak to me over the last few weeks.

Weekly Challenge: Week 3

I decided I would tackle three binders, as part of this week's challenge over at Bowl Full of Lemons. I missed week 1 due to computer monitor issues, so this seemed like a great time to play a little catch up. The first two binders I had, but they needed an overhaul and the last one had been a dream of mine for some time.

1. Home Management
This one keeps all the odds and ends I need to keep track of organized. I use the binder and my Palm Pre smartphone to keep things in order. I use my phone for my daily task list, shopping list, calendar, and contacts so you won't find those sections in my binder. Also my hubby keeps track of our budget and bill paying so I didn't really need a section for finances. Here are my dividers:

Meal Planning
Schedules - like for lessons, library, etc
Cleaning - schedule for weekly and deep cleaning (I am trying to use a rotating schedule because I never have time to clean everything at once anymore)
Medical - List of doctors, their phone numbers, and prescription information for each family member
Blogging - a place for my ideas
Projects - place to keep notes on things that come and go like birthday parties
Small Group - my husband and I lead our small group and now I have a place to keep that information all together

I did use some printables from Clean Mama in my menu planning, cleaning, and medical sections.

2. Home Schooling
This one keeps my lesson plans, school calendar, records, and curriculum ideas all in one place.

Daily Lesson Plans
Calendar
Records
Monthly Dividers - I use these to file ideas I want to use for each month. This way I have a place to put ideas/projects I come across, and then when I sit down to plan I have them with me.
Reference - this is for co-op information, library schedules, or curriculum lists I may need.

3. Recipe
This binder I just put together for the challenge. It had been a binder with recipes stuck inside loose, waiting till I got the chance to put it together. This one is divided like so:

Favorites - These are recipes I use a lot either because they are tasty, easy, or inexpensive. Some actually fit all three categories.
Freezer - These are recipes I know freeze well. I like to have at least one or two things in the freezer when things just don't go as planned.
Company - These are recipes we have deemed worthy of company. They are usually not only tasty, but have good presentation as well.
Appetizers
Desserts
Breakfasts

Teaching Tuesday: Reading and Writing Ideas

One of my favorite areas to teach when I was in the classroom was reading comprehension and creative writing. So I thought I would share a few ideas I have used to practice those skills. I geared the activities for pre-K to 2ndish grade, but you could adjust them for upper grades as well. These activities are great too, because they take very little prep time.

Reading Comprehension
You choose or have your child choose a book they haven't read before or at least one they haven't heard a million times. Then read the book together or have the child read to you depending on their ability and the level of the book. The book length needs to be one that can be read in one sitting.

Then take a piece of paper and fold it into thirds and label it beginning, middle, and end.

Then, depending on their ability, have them draw or write something that fits in each box. You can also write down what they tell you. All of these help develop reading and writing skills.


This is one my 4 year old did after reading Rainbow Fish. I was surprised at how quickly he came up with what to put in each box. The first is Rainbow Fish with all the special scales, then Rainbow Fish talking to the octopus, and last all the fish with special scales.

A second idea is to cover up the title of a book. Then read the book or have the child read the book to you. After you have finished reading have them tell you what a good title for the book would be. This helps you see if they are understanding what they are reading. It also helps teach the idea of finding the main idea.

Creative Writing
An easy way to get the creativity flowing is to share a picture and have the child write or tell you and you write down what is happening in the picture, just before or just after the picture was taken.

Here is a good example of a picture that would get the stories going.

Also this site that has several writing prompts.

Another idea is to choose a book that has a strong story line. Read the story aloud to the child, but don't read the ending. Then have the child tell, write, or draw how they predict the story ends. This activity uses so many great reading, writing, and problem solving skills.

A great book for this activity is The Mysterious Package by Francesca Chessa.

It is about a box that arrives and the two children in the story spend all day trying to decided what is in the package. So it is easy for the children to start making their own predictions about what is the box. After you are finished drawing, writing, and discussing read the real ending and talk about how it compares with their predictions.

Important Lessons

This morning Landon decided to take school into his own hands and gave Elaine some lessons. They went something like this:

"I am going to teach you the first thing you need to do if a bad guy attacks...karate chop."
"Second if you are on a roof and a bad guy attacks the best way to get away is to jump off...like this."

He was very encouraging with his words while he instructed her to be brave and fierce (his words, not mine).

When she would say she couldn't do it, he would gently say sure you can. If that wasn't enough he would tell her, "Well I guess you won't be a professional super hero like me."

Makes since to me, if you can't karate chop and jump off roofs, no super hero status.

Now onto much less important lessons like letter sounds and number recognition.

Weekly Challenge: Week 1

So when I saw that the first weekly challenge over at Bowl Full of Lemons was to make a home management binder, I was excited. I actually have one I have been using for over a year now, that could use an overhaul. I also knew this would be a great time to put together a mail center as they go hand in hand in my mind. When my monitor bit the dust it made it hard to really do much with my binder, so I started with the mail center.
First I located a basket that would be perfect, and it was just housing unread books on my husbands night stand. Then I gathered supplies to decorate some file folders.

Next time I would use mod podge for my adhesive the spray glue was very smelly.

I traced the folders onto the paper, cut out the paper, and glued it to the outside of the folders.

Here are the four I made. I stamped the titles on the tabs.

Here it is in use. It sits right next to the fridge in the kitchen which is where I always sort the mail. Now instead of stacks taking up space on our counter, each peice of paper has a place.

There is also room for my binder behind the files when it is finished. I hope to share it with you this weekend.

Where Did I Go?

Well I was here, but my computer monitor bit the dust. So I had to take a break from blogging. Just as I was planning to share some neat projects with you. We thought we could quickly remedy the situation with an over nighted cord we could use to hook a small TV we had in our bedroom up as our monitor. Then an ice storm hit and our cord was stuck in Indianapolis, IN. Oh well, there is always tomorrow, right? I am still planning to share what I came up with for the first week of A Bowl Full Of Lemons Weekly Challenge and I will also share this week's challenge too. But for now some cute pics of my little one!

We have been giving him baths in the sink while he sits in the Bumbo. Daddy usually gives him his baths and he loves the spray.

Here he is taking a Sunday afternoon nap. I can't believe he already fills up the swing.

He loves the excersaucer he got for Christmas. We have to stick a pillow behind him for now, but he doesn't care. He can spin himself all the way around and plays so purposefully with the toys.

Here he is getting his first haircut. He has cradle cap under his little fauxhawk, and we knew getting some of the length off would help it clear up and his hair to come in thicker. (We know this b/c his sister had one too!) He thought the whole process was quite funny.

I love these pictures, because this is how I often find Elaine...right next to Levi. Holding his hand, talking to him, rubbing his cheek, or giving the spontaneous hug. I can't wait to see how their relationship grows. She loves him so much, and he loves all her attention too.

Each time I have to deal with them I think that really needs cleaned out and organized, but then life calls me and it is left undone. So I have joined Bowl Full of Lemons Weekly Challenges. I hope to use it as motivation to tackle one thing at a time and in the end have a more efficient home. So I spend less time on the urgent and more time on the important. What a Week

Last week seemed to fly by. I had several projects that I wanted to get done around the house while hubby was off, but I can't think of one that got completed. I didn't even find the time to post my normal Teaching Tuesday post. But one thing I did do, was read and spend lots of time with my family and friends. I had been wanting to read Mary Beth Chapman's book Choosing to SEE: A Journey of Struggle and Hope. A few weeks ago, I noticed it was on sale for the Kindle for $2. So I bought it, and hoped I would get to read it soon. Then, my good friend, Shawna told me I had to read it and Kyle should read it too. So I set out to read it with him this week. We got through almost half together. We were laughing and crying from page to page. I sent him back to night shift with instructions to finish it on the Kindle and I borrowed Shawna's copy. I finished it up Friday night. I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend it. It is not just about the tragedy that forever changed them as a family, but about the journey God has them and each of us on. It is a must read. So I didn't get a lot of house work done, but we took time to enjoy each other as a family and catch up with good friends. What better way to spend the week.

Mom to Mom

It's Almost Nap Time is hosting a Mom to Mom link party today. She wants moms to share what has worked for them.

Three things popped into my head when I read her post. They are not related to each other, nor are they new ideas. Just three things I'm glad I do.

Baby Wearing - I have had some kind of carrier or sling for each of my children. For Landon we had the Baby Bjorn front carrier. I have to admit I only used it briefly because once he gained much weight, it killed my back. My husband on the other hand loved/loves it. We would do our grocery shopping with Landon strapped to his chest. It was great Landon felt snuggled and loved and we could concentrate on the task at hand. When our second came along I knew I wanted a sling for her. I would need my two hands free to take care of Landon who was a mere 22 months old. So I purchased a HotSling from Target. It worked great. It distributed the weight across my back. She loved it too. Then they got recalled for infants...so I was on the look out for something else for Baby #3. My friend recommended the Sleepy Wrap. Let me tell you, I wish I had had one from the beginning. It keeps the baby so snuggly and it so comfortable. I can do everything I need to, besides shower, with Levi snuggled up on my chest. He has been a super baby, but does have some tummy issues, and when I put him in the Sleepy Wrap he relaxes and can sleep or just take in the world around him. So I would recommend the Sleepy Wrap to any new mom.

Napping when Kids Nap - Do it. Nap when your kids nap. If some of your kids are too big for naps, have quiet time, and you nap. I am telling you it makes you a whole new women, just getting a quick power nap. I know you have a list of things to do during nap, and sometimes I have to skip nap too. But if you would even just let yourself nap a few times a week, you will think more clearly and be much more productive. I haven't had a straight 8 hours of sleep for a long time, because even once the baby is sleeping through the night little children wake and need taken back to bed. So catching a quick nap during the day has been essential.

No shoes in the house - I know this may sound silly, but it really revolutionized my life. Instituting no shoes in the house came from us moving into a home with hard wood floors on the first level. I read up on how to care for them, and the worst thing you can do is wear your outside shoes on them. It's like walking around with sandpaper on your feet. So we started it to care for our hardwood floors, but it has had so many benefits. First outside dirt stays at the door, so I have to sweep up less tracked in dirt. Second, and possibly my favorite, we always know where the kids shoes are. See we have a basket right by the door, and when the kids come in, their shoes go right in that basket. No more running around the house trying to find where they took off their shoes the last time, as you are trying to get to the library or church. So even if you don't care if you wear shoes in the house, having a central location for them is a must!

Enchiladacotti

Today's recipe is another adaptation of a recipe I found on Betty Crocker's site. In fact I have two adaptations to share with you. The first is Chicken Enchilada Lasagna and the second is what my husband has deemed Enchiladacotti.

Enchiladacotti w/lean beef ingredients are pictured.

12	uncooked lasagna noodles (12 ounces) or manicotti noodles depending on which variation you try
2	cans (10 ounces each) enchilada sauce
1	can (4.5 ounces) chopped green chiles
1	medium tomato, chopped (3/4 cup)
2	cups diced cooked chicken or 1 lb ground beef or turkey
1	cup shredded Pepper Jack Cheese (4 ounces)
8	medium green onions, chopped (1/2 cup)
1	cup sour cream
1	cup shredded Cheddar or Mexican Blend cheese (4 ounces)

Chicken Enchilada Lasagna

Heat oven to 350ºF. Grease rectangular baking dish, 13x9x2 inches. Then mix enchilada sauce, chilies and tomato. In separate bowl mix meat, Pepper Jack cheese, onions and 1 cup sour cream.

Spread about 1/2 cup sauce mixture in baking dish.

Then place a layer of lasagna noodles. Then layer half the meat mixture followed by half the remaining sauce mixture. Then repeat. Top with the Mexican Blend Cheese. Cover and bake 40 to 45 minutes or until hot in center and pasta tender.

Enchiladacotti

Prepare your pan, mix your sauce and meat mixture, and put sauce in bottom of pan just like in the above directions.

Then stuff the manicotti pasta (no need to precook as long as your sauce covers your pasta) with the meat mixture, and place them in the pan. I had a little extra filling for the pasta I had so I just filled in around the filled ones.

Then pour the remaining sauce mixture over the filled pasta.
Cover and bake 45 - 50 minutes or until hot in center and pasta tender.

This dish (either variation) is so yummy. It has a little more prep then most of my usual supper choices, but it is so worth it. So give it a try and let me know which variation you picked.

We're Organized Wednesdays...or Fridays

I wanted to get this simple project done in time to post Wednesday, and then Thursday, but alas it is now Friday. So you are getting a two for one today. First my simple organization and crafty project, and later a yummy recipe for Enchiladacotti. If you are not sure what that is, you'll just have to come back and check it out. Now on to my cute little tags.

It has been on my list since early December to really go through the childrens' toys that are kept in their rooms. Most of their toys are in the basement, so they are sorted more frequently. I knew there were lots of broken and outgrown toys stashed away upstairs. I think it happens because most of my work gets done while the kids are asleep, therefore I avoid working in their rooms. So a few weeks ago, my husband graciously offered to take the older two out for a morning of errands while I worked frantically in their rooms. So the organization part has been done for a while, but I wanted to make these cute tags for the cubbies.

To make the tags I used my new Cricut I received as a complete surprise for Christmas! It was a Black Friday special my step mom nabbed. I had a small one, but now I have the big one. I don't know much about it yet, but so far it has proven to be amazing. I am sure more crafty projects will come from this gift. I first cut out the white tags. Then cut out the ladybugs and frogs. These cubbies are in Elaine's room that she will eventually share with Levi until he is old enough to share the loft bed arrangement with his older brother. So I want to add some elements to the room that keep it from being all girl, hence the frogs. After I did the organizing and cleaning out, one whole cubby was empty! I attached a tag so it will be ready to label when we find something that needs a home.

I wanted to make the tags for a few reasons. Now someone else can assist in cleaning up and know where things go. They also help with early literacy as the kids see the word dishes and learn that is where the play dishes go. Also I think they make the plain cubbies so cute, which is what makes organizing fun.

Teaching Tuesday: Resources for Pre-School

Today I wanted to pass on a few resources that I have used to plan some hands on, age appropriate activities for both Landon and Elaine. For me the day gets away from me if I am not purposeful in my time with my children. Before I know it I have spent the morning on laundry, email, dishes, and cleaning. Then it is lunch time followed by nap. Then after nap it is supper prep time, then dinner, then baths and bedtime. The day is gone and I haven't taken the time to focus on my kids. Really spend time with them. So even when Landon was very little I started looking for ways to play with him intentionally and help him learn about the world around him. The first resource I found was a really fun book, Slow and Steady Get Me Ready, by June Oberlander. I purchased an older edition from ebay. It starts at birth and goes through age 5 with an activity a week. I haven't always done every activity with each kid, but when I am looking for something fun to do it is full of age appropriate ideas. The ideas usually involve things you find around the house. I have had to improvise a few times for instance when it suggests using empty spools...I don't sew enough to have empty spools lying around, but I always found something that would work. This fish activity was one I found in the book.

The second place I want to highlight is Hubbard's Cupboard. It is a website with tons of great ideas for 2 and 3 year olds. I have used lots of her ideas this year. I used her monthly themes loosely for Elaine. I love having the suggested books to read, because finding books at the library can be tricky while watching a 4 year old and a potty training 2 year old and pushing a stroller. I also used several of her ideas for Christmas too. Here Landon and Elaine are making shape angels, a link I found on Hubbard's Cupboard's Christmas list.

Next Tuesday I have some activities I have used to teach reading comprehension that can be used with several age levels and with almost any book. Later this week the crafty organization project I have been working on and another yummy recipe.

Steak and Pasta Soup with Homemade Peasant Bread

I have an easy supper idea to share. It is great on these cold winter nights.

The main course was a recipe I tweeked from Betty Crocker's website.

Steak and Pasta Soup

1 jar (around 26 oz) mushroom spaghetti sauce
2 1/2 cups water
1 lb boneless beef round steak, cut into 1/2-inch cubes (I purchased meat that was ready for stir fry and just cut the strips smaller)
9 oz refrigerated cheese filled tortellini (You could use ravioli)
Parmesan Cheese - grated

Pour the sauce, water, and beef into your crock pot. Cook on low 6 - 8 hours. Then turn heat up to high and add pasta. Cook for another 30 minutes. Serve with the cheese sprinkled on each bowl. If you have more then 3 - 4 people to serve you may want to double the soup recipe. We only had one serving left for hubby to take for lunch the next day.

I had been wanting to try making this Peasant Bread Recipe for awhile and this was the perfect meal to serve it with. Grocery Cart Challenge does a great tutorial so I will just let you hop over there to check it out. I made one loaf with Parmesan cheese on top and one with cinnamon and sugar. I have already made a batch again we enjoyed it so much.

Life with 4, 2, and New

Life with a 4 year old, a 2 year old, and a New baby (well he is technically 16 weeks) is never dull. Let me catch you up on what's going on with each of them.

4 - Landon - aka Superman, Spiderman, Ironman, Lightning Landon, and our newest alias Spy Guy
He spends his time climbing, jumping, and creating. He knows the sounds of most of the letters in the alphabet and can even read a few words, but would much rather learn about dinosaurs or interesting animal facts. He knows all the words to the theme song for the Wild Kratts cartoon. But he still loves to snuggle at bedtime and play "What's Your Favorite?" and his prayers are so sweet and genuine.

That brings us to

2 - Elaine -
She still spends most of her time trying to decide if she wants to be a big girl or a little girl. She loves to do school work and has actually surprised me with some of the things she understands. Yet often gets words confused like cheeto for cheetah and ghost for goat. She tucks all her babies into bed each night and keeps their diapers clean and hair brushed. She is getting quite brave in her pursuits to keep up with Spy Guy, but still needs lots of sympathy when she gets injured in the line of duty. She loves to sing and we love to listen.

And finally

New - Levi
He is getting so much personality and it isn't like his siblings as babies. He seems to really watch everything and notices mobiles and hanging toys his brother and sister always over looked. He is pushing himself up with his arms and reaches for toys. If he is on his tummy very long he rolls to his back, we are waiting anxiously for him to roll himself to his tummy. He is cutting two teeth and can bring toys to his mouth. He loves to snuggle and smiles so big when you talk to him. He is quite fond of his family and we can't imagine life without him. I've already had to pack away the newborn and 3 month clothes.

Even though seeing each of the children grow and change is bittersweet, I have been reminded to be present in the present. Each stage is packed with moments I never want to forget, but that doesn't mean I need to go back and repeat the past. Ashley at Under the Sycamore says it so well here and here.

Teaching Tuesday: Half Way Point

For all practical purposes we have reached a half way point through our first year of homeschooling. We didn't take off a long time at Christmas and New Years, for two reasons. The first being I had taken a break when Levi was born and again when I had surgery. Second, the children do well with the structure and routine especially when it is too cold to play outside. So I wanted to take some time to reflect on this half of the first year. Even though I did do some "school" with Landon last year it was very casual and informal. Which is how I think it should be. Kids need time to play, there is so much learning and growing during free play. So this year I have had to work out a balance not only for him, but for Elaine. She is only 2. She needs to play, play, play. She wants to do school work like Landon but doesn't have the attention span to hang in there, so often she becomes a distraction. Thankfully Landon has come to understand that when I take her and help her find some toys to play with, its not a reward for her while he is punished with "school". He is older and has new responsibilities. Also he has learned (not that he doesn't have to be reminded) that when she isn't interrupting and he is focused, our formal school time is quite brief. Some days it is only 30 min and at the most an hour. Outside of our structured school time we read books, paint, use our imaginations, cook, clean, go to the library, take karate, and play with our friends. All of those things are important, not just phonics and numbers. I feel good about the balance we have created.

As for the second half of the year we will press on with our phonics, numbers, Bible, and readiness skills. We will finish up our health and safety lessons and move into character traits. I am also going to add in some science experiments and lessons on dinosaurs thanks to some amazing books we received for Christmas. I am excited to share those with you as well.

Over the next few Tuesdays I plan to share some resources i have found for 2-3 year olds and what curriculum I plan to use for next year. I actually have some crafty ideas and recipes for later this week! We have snow here, so I am sure snow angels are in the plans for today. I hope you have a great Tuesday.

Kyle works a job that requires someone to be there 24 hours a day 7 days a week. He is on a rotating schedule of day and night shifts. It just so happened that his rotation fell so that he worked 6 am to 6 pm Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and the day after. So we decided to do our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day traditions early on the 22 and 23. We eat Mexican food on Christmas Eve and then come home to read the Christmas Story, and open presents. Each child gets 3 gifts in honor of the gold, frankincense, and myrrh given Jesus. I have enjoyed this tradition for lots of reasons one being that it keeps things simple and Kyle and I put a lot of thought into each gift. Here are some picture highlights.

On Christmas Morning they each have a "Santa" gift and filled stockings.

We had so much fun during our own little early celebrations. Even though we really missed Daddy on the actual Christmas Eve and Christmas Morning, we had fun visiting with family. We hope you had a Merry Christmas celebrating our Savior, and have a Happy New Year too!

Cheerful Giving

One of the character traits we work to instill in our children is cheerful giving. What better time of year to see those lessons in action. My husband and I have also felt we needed to take the love your neighbors verse a little more literal and love on our neighbors. So I decided we could make some yummy Christmas treats and give them to our immediate neighbors. We live by a family much like ours with small children, two retired couples, and a retired man who is a widower. One of our favorite homemade treats is Oreo Truffles. They are a little time consuming, but over all a simple recipe.

Oreo Truffles

1 package regular size Oreo cookies, crushed
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 package white almond bark
1 package chocolate almond bark

Using a food processor crush Oreo cookies until they are the consistency of potting soil (at least that is what it looks like to me).
Add cream cheese to cookies in food processor until it forms a ball.
Roll into walnut size balls.
Chill for an hour.
Melt approximately 3/4 package of white almond bark.
Stick a toothpick in an Oreo ball and dip it in the melted white almond bark.
Allow to harden on wax paper.
Takes about 15 min.
While waiting, melt about 1/4 package of chocolate almond bark.
When Oreo balls are no longer sticky to the touch, decorate with drizzles of chocolate and white almond bark.
I just use a fork to drizzle the almond bark, but you could use a sandwich bag with a tiny hole cut in a corner.

Lambie

All last week Elaine's must haves for bedtime included this little radio, her pink sparkly bouncy ball, and her pink tutu. She would put on her tutu, set her little radio up beside her pillow, and snuggle under the covers with the ball. When she woke up, down the stairs she would come carrying the radio and bouncy ball. No teddy bears for this little girl. Maybe her big brother is rubbing off on her. His bed is usually covered in action figures, hot wheels cars, and bouncy balls. She used to snuggle with a soft little lamb, now its a bouncy ball. She has standards though, because it must be pink and sparkly. Now she doesn't even check to see if Lambie is around...but don't worry Lambie,

I am sure you will be back on top eventually. Andy never really forgot Woody, right?

Pipe Cleaners and Yarn

If I am working on anything crafty and my older two children are awake they are quick to "help" me. So I am usually looking for something they can create with too. While I was working on the decorations for Levi's Dedication Party, I had two helpers. I gave them free reign with a bag of neon pipe cleaners and yarn. I am not exaggerating when I say they played for 30 - 45 minutes. I was only asked to assist when a piece of yarn needed trimming, or to view a finished creation. Sometimes we over think what kids need to be creative. This was so much fun for them and it was not messy. No glue, paint, or play dough was even involved. So zero preparation and very little clean up, allowed for lots of creative play. That works for me! Here are a few of their creations.

Buffalo Chicken Squares

I am always looking for a new recipe. For this one I actually just tweaked a recipe that has been passed around in various forms for a long time. When we brought home Elaine from the hospital a family from our church brought over what she called, "Amish Chicken Squares." I have also come across recipes where these little squares no longer claim any ties to the Amish and go by "Crescent Chicken Squares." The recipe for those is usually something like this one from www.food.com.

Chicken Squares

3 ounces cream cheese, softened
3 tablespoons butter, melted
2 cups cooked chicken, cubed
salt and pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon onion, chopped
8 ounces Pillsbury Refrigerated Crescent Dinner Rolls
3/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Blend butter with cream cheese Add milk and onion. Stir in chicken. Add salt and pepper.
Separate dinner rolls into four rectangles, pressing perforations to seal. Spoon 1/2 cup mixture into center of each rectangle. Fold over two opposite sides to meet in the middle forming a square. Press the other two edges together to seal.
Brush top with melted butter and dip into bread crumbs. Place on non stick cookie sheet crumb side up.
Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes until browned.

I was looking for something new so I made them as follows

Buffalo Chicken Squares

1/3 - 1/2 cup Buffalo Sauce (I used Frank's)
1/3 - 1/2 tsp garlic powder
2 cups cooked chicken, cubed
2 tablespoons milk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Blend butter with cream cheese Add milk, Buffalo sauce, and garlic powder. Stir in chicken.

Teaching Tuesday: Homeschool Co-op End of the Semester Program

So I know its not Tuesday, but I was planning to post this yesterday. The problem was that I needed all of yesterday to recover from Monday night...which is what this post is about. Stay with me and you will understand.

As this is really my first year of "structured" homeschooling, I was looking for a co-op to participate in that would give Landon time in a learning activity away from home. A co-op is basically a group of parents that come together to provide "classes" to fellow homeschoolers. So this past semester he took a martial arts class through a local homeschool co-op. I was very pleased with his instructor, and he loved going to karate. I was just as excited as he was that there would be a program to demonstrate what each class had learned during the semester. This program took place this past Monday night, and he did excellent. It was fun watching him take this step in his growing up process. So our first co-op experience was a success and we look forward to participating again next semester.

So you may be asking, "Why did it take all day Tuesday to recover from such a positive experience?"...well it was the surrounding events. All Monday I anxiously awaited the time when I would need to feed the children (including nursing the baby), dress all of us, and load the car to make our way to the church where the program would take place. I found myself going over the process again and again in my head to insure everything would go smoothly. So at 4:00 I began, first I made supper. Then while the older two children were eating I got dressed. Then I washed them up and got them dressed. Then I asked them to get in the van and buckle up. I got Levi all buckled in his car seat, and went to get my keys from the diaper bag. I reached into the pocket where I keep them...not there. So I check other pockets...not there. I start looking on dresser tops, kitchen counters, coat pockets, console in van, etc...not there. I frantically call my Dad who is on his way, but since Landon had to be there 30 minutes earlier, he isn't even close yet. I then call my husband who was leaving work to break the bad news. He responds calmly by telling me he will contact Landon's teacher and he will come and get us. I am in tears. I feel like I am failing my son who is so excited about his first program. I decide to check the diaper bag one more time...and I find keys...right where I had looked. Right where I keep them, in the diaper bag. So I grab Levi's seat, snap him in the car, grab the brownies I made for the reception and leave for the church. My van clock said 5:54, Landon was supposed to be there at 6. So when I get to the church I pull up to the gym door where he is supposed to practice and let him out. I then watch him go to the correct door, and I proceed to park. As I snap Levi's carseat into the stroller, I hear Landon yell, "Mom the door is locked". At the same time I hear an adult say he can go in with us...I vaguely recognize the face from the distance I am away, but what choice do I have? Leave him out in the cold waiting for me, or the younger two while I try to find his teacher? So in he goes. I frantically get Elaine out of the van and run into the building pushing the stroller and carrying brownies. I am relieved to see Landon sitting at a table with his class. I make my way to the chapel, finally catching my breath for the first time in about 2 hours. As soon as the program begins Levi signals he is ready to nurse. So I excuse myself to find a quiet spot. Hoping I make it back to see Landon...no worries. The program that started at 6:30 did not get over until 8:00, with Martial Arts near the very end. We let the kids get one cookie each from the reception, which upset Landon because he didn't want to just eat something unhealthy, and upset Elaine because she loves a party. So we drag two over tired children to the van.

We headed home where the children watched a cartoon while Kyle and I finally ate our supper which I had going in the crock pot. Then finally it was bedtime. I think it was 9:30 before the children were in bed. So yesterday we all took naps. Landon slept for 3 1/2 hours!

So needless to say no worries about me stealing the Mom of the Year title. Loosing your keys, dropping a 4 year old off in the cold, letting him walk in a huge church with ???, and letting your kids watch cartoons at 8:30 pm so you can eat are probably deal breakers.

Levi's Dedication

It has taken me a few weeks to find time to share Levi's Dedication Service at Church. At our church we practice child dedication. The service includes each family bringing their child to be dedicated forward and having the father pray for the child. They not only pray for the child but also their (and the mother's) role as parent for the child. It has always been a special time for us as a family as we have brought each of our children before the church and dedicated to raising them in a Christian home. For us that means living out before our children what it means to live in relationship with our Savior, day in and day out. This is no easy task, so each dedication service has been a time to really reflect and call on God to not only guide our parenting but strengthen our walks with him.

Father God, we come again praising you for the blessing of another child. Our family asks for your continued guidance as we commit to raising Levi in the Christian faith. We pray that you would move in his life so that he will develop a deep faith in you. We ask you to use our home as a safe refuge where Levi can see you working. Make it a place where love grows continually. Shield us from the Satan's attacks. Equip me to be a father that reflects Levi’s Heavenly Father. We acknowledge that he belongs to you. Give Levi a desire to know and love you so that he will fulfill the purpose that you created him for. We ask this in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

After the service we invite family and friends to celebrate with us. This time I used a polka dot theme for the decorations.

After seeing these paper decorations on another blog, I have been waiting for the perfect time to use them. I think they went great with the napkins and cake. You can see a how to on them here. I didn't round the corners of mine though. I hung them with fishing line. My husband and kids really liked them so we are leaving them up through Christmas. They are so easy!

We had a great day, and feel so blessed by our friends and family that support us in raising the children God has chosen to bless us with.

Teaching Tuesday: COUNTING down to Christmas

I love using the calendar to teach basic skills. It is full of teaching opportunities. For the month of December I have added something to our "Calendar Time". It is a Christmas tree that needs decoration. Each day we will find the number of the date and cover it with an ornament. This will reinforce what we are working on during our math lessons and be a fun way to count down to Christmas. To make this countdown I used the free print out here. I printed it on card stock so it would hold up throughout the month (remember a 4 and 2 year old will be the ones using it). Then I glued the Christmas Tree onto red construction paper. Then I punched out the circles using a circle punch. If you don't have a circle punch you could cut them by hand. I placed them in a baggie. I then hung the tree and circles next to our calendar. You can find a similar idea here that uses sight words and stars. Check back next Tuesday for more ideas on how to use the calendar to teach important math and language skills.

Thankful

I am so thankful for a little girl with bed head and breakfast on her face, still able to pull off some bling (see the one earring).

I am thankful for a baby boy who still looks handsome in a spit up covered bib and faux-hawk.

I am thankful for a big brother who is learning new things everyday and growing up way too fast.

I am thankful for a husband that is very understanding when the roast is left in the van instead of being placed in the fridge, the chicken lasagna is left un-made, and allows his wife to spend the day Christmas shopping with her mom.

I have so much to be thankful for.

Teaching Tuesday: Rewarding

I have to be honest homeschooling has not been the easiest thing on my to do list the last two months. After bringing home Levi, I was scheduled for umbilical hernia repair surgery. It was scheduled two days before Levi turned 6 weeks old. The surgery went well and Levi only had one pumped bottle and I was back to nursing him. The recovery from the aforementioned surgery was much more then I expected so about all I got done for a week after was nursing Levi (and watching lots of HGTV). I am so thankful for my husband and mother who pitched in to cover the other duties I was leaving undone...except for school. I had to redo my sketched out plan for the year as we were at least a week behind. So between adjusting to our new addition and recovering from surgery, juggling school has been tricky, but we have pushed ahead. It hasn't been without rewards either. This week Landon sounded out whole words for the first time and his face lit up with excitement. Elaine has been doing lots of pre-reading "things". She recognizes letters on things and "reads" them. She also loves to "read" books to Levi. I think she is going to be more like me in that reading just clicks for her.

All of these things have been rewarding but I have to tell you they weren't the things at the top of my list as I sat down to reflect on these last few weeks of homeschooling. It was over hearing Elaine sing "God is so Good" which we had just learned that morning during our school time. That simple song is filled with so much truth.

As a child I also sang a "He answers prayers" verse. It was so sweet to hear her singing these truths. I also had a very good conversation with Landon about what happens when people don't trust in Jesus. This wasn't a scheduled or planned lesson, it just sprang from some questions he was asking on the way home from the grocery store. Academics are important to me. I want my children to have the skills they need to accomplish whatever God calls them to vocationally, but I know it is all in vain if I don't take the time to point them to Christ first.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.

Torn

Our little girl has been torn lately. On one hand she clings to her role as little sister to her big brother...wanting Daddy to carry her, wanting mommy to rock her, not using the potty, even telling us, "I'm not big, I'm little."

The next moment she is telling us, "I can do it all by myself." Much of the time embracing her role as big sister.

Helping getting Levi dressed, taking care of her own "babies", and imitating her older brother whenever she can.

I have to admit I am somewhat torn too. It would make bedtime so much faster if she didn't want to be rocked, but then I try to remember my momma rocking me....and I realize this time will pass so quickly. So quick Elaine will have a hard time remembering it. I'll want to rock her, and she will be too big. I'll want her to hold my hand, but she won't need to. So even though at times she can be highly emotional, I am going to try and cherish these moments. I think it will help to remember she is trying to figure out her new role, her place in our family.

I can relate to her feelings. There are times I want to be held, and yet I am being asked to hold instead. There are times I want to be carried, but I have to walk. Other times I long to just sit and hold, but have to do laundry. Times I want to play games and read, but have to make supper. We really aren't that different, and before I know it she will be a mom. She will have a whole new set of emotions she is working through, and she will have had lots of emotions she has already been asked to work through. So for now I will try to help her sort it out. Hoping I can point her to Christ along the way.

Teaching Tuesday: Reflecting

Today I just wanted to spend a little time reflecting on how "school" has been going. As I have been spending lots of time nesting this week, I am going to keep this simple and use a list format for what works for us and what does not.

What does not work:

Having a strict beginning time (Rushing everything to be sure we are starting right at 8)
Insisting the 2 year old track right with the 4 year old
Lots of sitting very still
Lots of coloring

What is working:

Starting when our normal morning routine is finished (ex. breakfast is over, kids are dressed, mom has showered, dishwasher is emptied, laundry is started)
Having some alternatives ready for Elaine (ex. paper to cut and glue, puzzles to do, etc) Then she is free to join when she is up to it, and Landon is less distracted by her. The site Hubbard's Cupboard has been very helpful.
Using hands on/movement activites
Free style art time - Landon is not a fan of coloring when he is given a specific task, such as color the 3 apples red. He loves, on the other hand, to paint picture after picture. We do spend some time on following specific directions as this is an important skill, but making time for him to paint or use play dough is also very important.

I am hoping to share a little craft project we are going to do to get ready for the new baby later this week. That is if nesting doesn't completely consume me.

Teaching Tuesday: Vowel Review

Landon has been introduced to the name and sound for each of the five vowels a, e, i, o, and u. He seems to have o and u mastered but a, e, and i were giving him some trouble. So this week we are having a Vowel Party, which is a fun way of saying a vowel review. Each day Landon is making a "poster" for one of the vowels. We are also using more tactile activities to help him commit the information to memory before we introduce more letters and sounds. For the posters I printed the capital and lowercase of each vowel and pictures of items that begin with the vowel's short sound. These can be found here. We used the block formation as that most closely matched what he is learning with the ABEKA manuscript curriculum. We go over the name, sound, and formation of the letter. Then he colors the letter and pictures. Next I cut out the letters, while he cuts out the pictures. Finally he glues them on construction paper of his choice to make a poster. Here is the one he made for Aa.

We are also writing our letters in shaving cream and painting them with jello paint. For the shaving cream you give the child enough shaving cream to create a thin layer on his or her desk. Then they can write the letters with a finger, and then spread out the shaving cream again to erase. A simple jello paint recipe can be found here along with a few other fun "paint" ideas. You can also mix a small amount of jello or kool aide powder with cool whip for fun paint. Hopefully this week will be a fun review of the short vowels for Landon. These activities would work well for introducing or reviewing any of the letters.

A New Revelation: Part 2

As I accept the challenge to pray that Christ would reveal more of himself to me each day, I have been overwhelmed with the transformation of my thoughts that has occurred. As I shared yesterday I have been released from the defeated feeling the enemy uses, and now am focused on the fact that God wants us to overcome. He convicts to bring us closer into relationship with himself. To purify and make us holy, not leave us in despair about how far off we are from ideal. You may be wondering what all of this has to do with studying the book of Revelation. Isn't Revelation all about Christ returning and the end of the world as we know it? Well it is most definitely about all that but it has so much application to the Here and Now, hence Beth Moore's title for her study of the book. Remember,

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

So what does Revelation say about overcoming. Just listen to the promises Christ presents the seven churches he addresses if they overcome:

To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God. Revelation 2:7

He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death. Revelation 2:11

To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it. Revelation 2:17

To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations-- 27 'He will rule them with an iron scepter; he will dash them to pieces like pottery -- just as I have received authority from my Father. 28 I will also give him the morning star. Revelation 2:26-28

He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. Revelation 3:5

Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name. Revelation 3:12

To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. Revelation 3:21

Amazing promises! So how does one overcome? Our trust for salvation must be fully in Jesus and His death and resurrection. Then we live in His spirit daily. Not seeing Christ through the world's eyes, but seeing the world and ourselves through the eyes of Christ.

The funny thing is I think God has been trying to use my son to teach me to be an overcomer all along. See Landon is sure he can win at everything, and if for a second he has the slightest struggle he is devastated. In fact his desire to overcome was one of the things that had me feeling defeated. So I thought for sure I needed to get Landon to understand he can't win at everything, when his desire for victory is God given. Now don't get me wrong, Landon still has to learn humbleness, being a good sport, perseverance, and obedience. Just like I still have much to learn. But his desire to be an overcomer is not something to be disciplined, only shaped. So he understands his victory is in Christ, not in himself.

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our LORD Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57

This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:3-5

A New Revelation

I am currently in Beth Moore's Here and Now...There and Then, which is a study on Revelation. I just completed the 3rd session last night, and I was blown away. I know that God is always present and at work, but I was very tuned in last night to what He had to say. It was like session 3 had been crafted for this specific time in my life. Last week was very rough for me. I just had these general feeling that I was failing at...well everything. Beth asks us to let Christ reveal more of himself to us each week, so I prayed God would show me how to succeed at this life He called me too. Thinking He was trying to teach me something about the way I had been doing life. I felt better as the week progressed, but not truly victorious. Then I went to Bible Study last night. One of the first things she pointed out was that God wants us to live as overcomers, but that the Enemy (Satan) wants us to live defeated. I quickly realized that the generalized feeling of failure I had felt was not of the Spirit, but of the Enemy. See the Spirit will convict specifically, while the Enemy uses generalities so we don't have an action plan. Last night the Spirit spoke right to what had been holding me back, and instead of feeling defeated, I felt enlightened and ready to be an overcomer! Hebrews 7:25 states speaking of Jesus:

Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

Jesus is interceding for us...He lives to intercede for us. While listening to the enemy left me wondering if I would ever succeed, conviction from the Spirit left me anticipating success. I don't mean success in the world's sense of the word...lots of material things, fame, and power. I mean overcoming sin patterns and living out the call of Christ on my life. That is the type of victory that is truly fulfilling anyway. I plan to share more specifically what I learned, not that I could ever put it all into words. So come back tomorrow for more revelation.

Teaching Tuesday: Using Signs

One of the major focuses of Landon's K4 curriculum is learning the names and sounds for each letter in the alphabet. He is struggling somewhat with keeping all those straight. The ABEKA phonics starts with teaching the vowels and their sounds. So we have learned a, e, i, o, and u. I decided to incorporate some kinesthetic learning to help him with memorizing these letters. For those non ed majors, kinesthetic learning is a learning style in which learning takes place by the student actually carrying out a physical activity, rather than listening to a lecture or merely watching a demonstration. It is also referred to as tactile learning. People with a kinesthetic learning style are also commonly known as do-ers (Wikipedia). For this task I am teaching Landon the American Sign Language sign for the letter along with its name and sound. Just by adding the sign his focus is greatly improved, and hopefully his learning is too. He is a mover and a shaker so standing or sitting still is a struggle for him, but by giving his little body something constructive to do, all that moving can actually benefit his learning. Unexpected Growth

We used to have purple petunias in the flower boxes on our front porch. I happily watered them while the kids played with sidewalk chalk or rode their tricycles. The porch, after all, is one of my favorite spots. Unfortunately we no longer have the purple petunias. See it got hot outside. In fact, it got very hot outside and very humid, and I was very pregnant. I would think about going outside and just sweat, so the flowers became neglected and finally met their end. The crazy part is that we still have a little petunia growing at our house. It is not in one of the flower boxes, in a flower bed, or in a nice flower pot on the deck. It is growing out of a crack in the floor of our garage...

What an unexpected surprise. I am not at all sure how this pink little flower found its way here or got its start, but it is growing there none the less. It hasn't receive special treatment like fertilizer or watering each day, but has flourished. So even though I don't have any petunias in my flower boxes, I have this little flower to remind me that often growth comes in the most unexpected circumstances. I am reminded that where ever God has us for the moment, is where we are supposed to bloom.

Zucchini Lasagna

This year we had access to lots of zucchini from my Mom's garden. So my husband taking an idea from my mom and perfecting it, created the Zucchini Lasagna. It is a much healthier take on a classic dish, then the white pasta and ground beef version most of us are used to.

Here are the ingredients he uses, followed by his recipe:

Zucchini, 580 grams - sliced thinly
Mushrooms, fresh, 258 grams - sliced
Ground turkey, 93% lean, 16 oz - browned with minced onion flakes
1 can Hunts Mushroom Spaghetti Sauce, 751 grams - seasoned to taste with additional garlic, oregano & bay leaf
Mozzarella Cheese, part skim milk, 8 oz
Cottage Cheese, 2% Milkfat, 400 grams
Egg, fresh, 1 large
Parmesan Cheese, grated, 36 grams

Prep Instructions:

Use a food processor to cut the zucchini and soak it in ice salt water to flavorize it. Then, brown the ground turkey with onion flakes and add the spaghetti sauce, garlic, oregano & bay leaf to simmer. Beat egg and mix together with cottage cheese. Set cottage cheese mixtures aside. Drain the zucchini.

Layered like this (bottom to top):
1/2 of zucchini
1/2 of mushrooms
1/2 of meat sauce
1/2 of cottage cheese
1/2 of mozz cheese
Remainder of zucchini
Remainder of mushrooms
Remainder of cottage cheese
Remainder of mozz cheese
Remainder of sauce (to cover)
Sprinkle the parm cheese on top

Bake uncovered @ 350 for 45-55 min.
Rest for 15 before cutting.

Prep and assembly takes about an hour.

Picture Frame Mats

We have been in our house a little over a year now and we still have little stacks of pictures that have never found a new place to hang. I decided to at least get some of them hung this week. The pictures in some of the frames are outdated, so I first had some new pictures printed. Then I set out to make mats that would match another project that I had finished but had yet to hang...my family rules. I came across the idea for that project here. I think I finished it right around Christmas last year. It has set propped on my scrap booking table ever since. So here is the project I completed this week.

First I took white photo safe card stock and created a base that would fit inside the picture frame. Then I lightly sketched a guide to show the portion of the mat that would show in the frame once the picture was placed in the center.

Then I selected the paper I wanted to use. For mine I chose the scrap paper left from the previous project that I am planning to hang with the pictures.

Then using Modge Podge and torn, cut, and ripped pieces of paper I began creating the mat. I basically used the same method I used on the letter E I made for Elaine's room. Here is the mat after a few pieces of paper have been put in place.

Here are the finished mats before being placed in the frames.

Here the mats are in frames with pictures, along with my version of the family rules project. Hopefully I can get these on the wall today too.

First Official Photo Shoot

At the very beginning of August Kyle and I decided to take a try at our first official photo shoot for Landon's 4 year and Elaine's 2 year pictures. We got our first "real" camera back in May, and are still very much in the learning process. We were fairly pleased with this first effort though, so I thought I would share a few.

Closet Fun

I wanted to share a quick little craft project, if you can call it that, I used in Elaine and the new baby's closet. I haven't had much time to be creative and this at least let me use some of my crafty tools. I wanted a way to sort Levi's clothes that would make them easy to find and easy to see what he has in each size, since most of his wardrobe has been handed down to him. So I made little tags to hang from the closet bar to separate each size. I am hoping this also helps others find things quickly that will be helping out with things when the baby is born. Here is what I did:

First I gathered the materials: index cards, circle punch, paper trimmers, adhesive, scissors, scrap paper in chosen colors, and a matching pen/marker.

Next I punched a medium/large circle in the top of each card. Just make sure your circle will fit around the closet bar the clothes/tags will be hanging from. Also make sure that the circle isn't so close to the edge that it will rip easily as it slides over the bar.

Then I used the scap paper to decorate the tags, leaving just enough room between the circle punch and the paper to label the tag with the size. You will also need to cut a straight line from the edge of the card to circle to give you a spot to slide it over the closet bar.

Here is the finished product before I put them in the closet. I plan to also make some for Elaine's side too. Her's will most likely be labeled play and dress rather then by size. This will help Daddy from putting her in a church dress to go to the zoo. He would have her dressed as a princess for all occasions.

Teaching Tuesday: Week 2

Our second week of homeschooling went well. I am still learning how to juggle my 2 year old, while encouraging my 4 year old to focus on the lesson. I think many times I am more distracted by the extra commotion then he is. When I look at the 2nd week as a whole, I am excited by how much learning is happening.

I thought I would take this week and give a little background into the curriculum we have decided to use for those that might be interested. As a first grade teacher I taught ABEKA phonics. It was my first look at the program, and I was very impressed. It was very different from the whole language approach that I had been taught with in elementary school. The first graders were reading and writing so well. So I knew that I wanted to use ABEKA phonics, and when looking at my options, felt it in my best interest to use the whole K4 ABEKA curriculum for Landon. It is well rounded and easy to follow. Knowing right after our school year got started we would be bringing home a new baby, I wanted something that was spelled out day to day. I didn't want to be creating activities from scratch each week. I do like to incorporate some of my own learning games and style, but ABEKA gives a thorough plan on its own, which is a real relief when things are hectic. Which I am sure will be increasingly true when the new baby arrives.

For Elaine I really just wanted a few things so she wouldn't feel left out. I am not a huge fan of lots of structure for a 2 year old. They really still need so much exploring and play time, but knowing her personality I knew she would want "work" of her own. I decided to get the Learning Numbers for 2 year-olds workbook from ABEKA. It is really just a coloring book that focuses on numbers. The pages look similar to Landon's, enough that she feels like she has important work too. I also picked up the Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills Preschool book too. I got ours at Sams Club for $7.86, which I think is a steal for all it includes. It it is divided into several sections that include: basic skills, reading readiness, writing readiness, and math readiness. I know she will not use most of it this year, but she likes the pages about colors and shapes. I let her play the games with us, altering the directions for her age. For us this has worked better then just finding a completely different activity to occupy her.

Next Tuesday I plan to include some pictures of our school space, and hopefully before then a quick craft that made organizing Elaine and the new baby's closet a little more fun.

Teaching Tuesday: Week 1

If you would have asked me 5 years ago where I would send my children to school, it would have been a very definitive answer. My answer would have been the private Christian school where I was teaching. I love that school. It was a great group to work with, all with a sincere passion to share Christ with our students while equipping them with the academics skills needed to be life long learners. Hoping to give them a Biblical worldview that would prepare them for whatever God called them. I knew I would stay home with my children when they were small, Kyle and I discussed that before we were even married. It was and is what we both wanted for our children. So when I had Landon, I left my position at the school, knowing I would return when my children were ready for school. Well Landon is now ready, well ready for preK anyway...but I'm not ready to go back. I have Elaine still at home and will soon be welcoming a new addition in a few weeks. So after lots of prayer and counsel, we decided we would homeschool. We are planning to take it year by year, child by child. I still love the school I taught at, and highly recommend it to all those who are looking for a private Christian school. For now though, God has called us to homeschool.

God blesses us when we follow his call. As parents discussed where they would be sending their children to preschool and getting supplies, I prepared our "classroom" and supplies. As I heard of my fellow teachers getting ready for Back to School Night, I read over the curriculum I had selected. I became more and more excited for our first day of school, and our first week went great! Not without any bumps, but I was really pleased. I soon realized how much I had missed teaching. Homeschooling feels so right for us at this stage. I can use the way God has gifted me in teaching, while still being the Mom God called me to be to our younger children.

I still feel like my time as a classroom teacher isn't over just postponed a few more years. We will continue to seek God's plan for our family and follow it with the strength only He can equip us with.

Making a Comeback...with Whole Wheat Waffles

Things have been slightly busy around here, and the tiredness of the third trimester has hit. I wake up at 6 get my shower, eat breakfast, feed the children, dress them, and I am ready for a nap. Of course, I don't get a nap and often get very little sleep at night these days, but I have missed blogging. It gives me a place to reflect and document some of our family's happenings, and maybe someone else will be encouraged or get idea for their own journey toward the goal. So I am making a comeback this week.

I am starting with a breakfast recipe our family has really enjoyed, Whole Wheat Peanut Butter Waffles. They have a hearty flavor that is really tasty with maple syrup. I have also sprinkled the topside of the waffles with cinnamon and sugar before cooking as well. Both ways were a hit. My oldest loves them, and asks for them often. One batch makes enough to warm up in the toaster on the following morning. I am sure they would freeze well too. We would have to make a double batch to have any left to freeze though. I love finding recipes that replace white flour with whole wheat. If you give this recipe a try, let me know what you think.

I am changing Teaching Tuesdays to a place to record the adventure of homeschooling we are embarking on this year, I am planning to use it to reflect on the successes as well as the struggles. So check back tomorrow to see how our first week went.

Bugalicious Birthday

We have been back from vacation for over a week, but I am just now getting back to some kind of routine. I have pictures to share from our trip, but I wanted to share some highlights from Landon's 4th Birthday Party first.

My husband wanted to make Landon's pinata this year. It was quite a task, but it turned out great.

First he taped together balloons to create the general shape for the caterpillar. Then using an Elmer's glue and water mixture he covered the balloon shape with newspaper. This process was repeated a few times.

Then a layer of tissue paper and crepe paper was added. This part was quite time consuming.

Finally a face, antennae, hair, and candy were added.

He is quite cute I think.

A bug party wouldn't be complete without dirt pudding, cupcakes with gummy worms, and lots of fun. Here are a few highlights from the rest of the party.

I think Landon and his friends had a great time. Landon is already planning his next birthday. This might be helpful in giving Daddy a head start on the pinata...

Vacation in El Paso, TX

I am writing this post from my in-laws living room in El Paso, TX. I was planning to post details of my son's 4th birthday before leaving, but packing took priority. So I made sure the pictures I wanted to use were uploaded and headed to El Paso. I sat down to type Teaching Tuesday: How to have a Super Buggy Birthday, but I am not able to access the pictures as I had originally thought. Bringing Up Girls

I am here to tell you that boys are very different than girls. Therefore raising boys is very different than raising girls. Our little princess is only 2, but I can tell we are in for lots of smiles and tears "bringing her up." We have only read the first four chapters of the book, but I have already learned so much. Did you know that little girls go through infantile puberty? I did not.

Bravery

I had a good talk with this little "big" guy about bravery.

As we were walking back to the house after checking to see if we had any raspberries growing yet, he took my hand. Then he told me that he holds B'yane's (his nickname for his little sister) hand when she is scared.

"Like when she is scared of bugs or bears getting her."

"I can do that because I am brave. She is smaller then me."

This little one taught me about bravery too. Soon after this picture was taken I saw the bird flap his wings and try to fly. The momma bird was watching and coaching from a nearby tree.

She didn't interfere with her little one's first flight, but she was there to cheer him on. I think that is one of the hardest parts of being a momma...not interfering with our little ones' flights. Sometimes I want to try and micro manage each decision and behavior of my children, but I am reminded that God has a plan for each of their lives.

He has set the path before them, and one day this little "big" guy will leave the nest. I have to let him be brave now, so he can be brave then. I know it sure takes bravery to follow the path God sets before me.

Teaching Tuesday: Learning from my Daughter

Last night I was awakened by Elaine screaming. I guess it was actually very early morning around 2 am. At first she just let out a scream, and then as I hurried up the stairs to her room she began calling for Daddy. Daddy was at work. When I got to her room, I picked her up and began to console her. I asked her if she had a bad dream and she answered, "yes." I said what happened and she said, "Daddy left me." I reassured her that Daddy hadn't left her, he was at work. I told her that her Daddy loved her too much just to leave her. She soon calmed down and drifted back to sleep. As I headed back to bed unable to fall asleep right away, I began to think about how much our Heavenly Father loves us. Yet so many times we think He has forgotten, overlooked, or even left us. Elaine reminded me in the middle of the night, that we are never alone. God never leaves us.

Elaine's dream also reminded me that Dads have such a huge role in their daughters' lives. They are the first encounter little girls have with Fatherly love. Dads must work hard to reflect our Heavenly Father to their daughters (and sons).

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." Deuteronomy 31:8

Adventures with Daddy

This morning Kyle took the kids to Wesselman Woods which is a nature preserve in our area. It is one of his favorite places to take Landon and Elaine. I headed to visit with a good friend and Kyle (armed with our new camera) headed to the nature preserve. I think they had a good time and he was able to capture some neat pictures.

Yesterday I promised to post some pictures from our anniversary trip. The day before the trip my birthday present arrived...a new camera. It is our first "real" camera. So this trip was an experiment for us, and we were thankful for the automatic feature. :) We did learn a few things, but I plan to continue posting about our venture into photography and we can learn together. Teaching Tuesday: Time with Your Spouse

I know I am a day late again...My husband and I just returned from our 10th anniversary trip. Our actual anniversary is June 3, but this was the best time for us to get away. We took a trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. My husband planned it all, as planning can be something that causes me stress instead of relaxation. It was great. The children stayed with Grandma and Grandpa, and we had 6 nights on our own. I will post some pictures of the trip tomorrow, but today I wanted to highlight something I learned while on the trip. We were able to enjoy lots of uninterrupted conversation. Uninterrupted by kids, phone calls, life, etc. I was reminded how important true listening can be. Not just listening to the answers of questions we ask, but listening to whatever it is our spouse wants to tell us. It is easy to just have conversations about the immediate and not really know what is on the heart of our spouse. On our trip I learned some new goals Kyle has, and we set some together for our family. It was a great trip and served as a good reminder for us to take time out to truly listen to each other.

Teaching Tuesday: Big Thoughts for Little Thinkers

Today I don't really have something to teach or something I have been taught. Instead I have a tool that I think has been great in teaching my children basic Spiritual Truths. The set of books I would like to recommend is Big Thoughts for Little Thinkers by Joey Allen. These books present The Scripture, The Gospel, and The Trinity in a way that little ones can really grasp on to. I know that each time we read through the books more of the truths really make sense to them. The books have also been great conversation starters too. Landon has even started conversations with his grandma about the Trinity. I highly recommend Big Thoughts for Little Thinkers to pass on important Biblical Foundations to your children. What tools have you used that seem to really inspire spiritual growth in your family?

Teaching Tuesday: Creating a Home for Hair Bows

Even though Elaine is only 2 she already has quite the collection of hair bows. Her bows used to hang on a single ribbon hung with a lady bug thumbtack on the wall. This solution was just not working anymore. She had too many bows to fit on the single ribbon and the weight often pulled the thumbtack out of the wall. Which brings me to today's project. Here is how I made it...

Find a wooden cutout that would match the room decor. (I used a ladybug Elaine was given for Christmas) Choose ribbon that will be thick enough to lay flat when clipped with the hair bows.
Layout the ribbon and cut two equal pieces. (Following a tip from my hubby I used a narrow red and black ribbon that I backed with a wider solid black ribbon.)
Seal both ends of the ribbon. Here are tips on sealing ribbons. I use the match method.
Then glue the ribbons to the wooden cutout. Remember to glue enough of the ribbon to the cutout to support the weight of the hair bows, and to glue the "pretty side" facing the cutout.
Hang cutout on the wall and fill with hair bows!

I also made a new hair bow for Elaine using some of the ribbon. Here are the directions I followed.

Well for all of you who came to the blog bright and early today to see that project I hinted would be discussed on this Teaching Tuesday, all I have are my apologies. I did get most of the project done, but did not get to put the finishing touches on it, or load the pictures to be posted. See my hardworking husband decided today was the day to clean out the garage. Something that most definitely needed to be done, don't get me wrong, but not exactly what I had planned for today. But all that aside, at the end of the day we can both park in our garage! This is something that has not occurred since we moved into the house last August. So you will have to check back tomorrow for those exciting project details. I would push ahead and finish the project tonight, but I am heading to bed soon, as all that cleaning wore me out. The New Norm

I have finally reached a point in my pregnancy, where I feel somewhat normal. At least I have adjusted to the new norm anyway. In just 2 weeks we should be able to find out if our new little one will be a boy or a girl. My oldest is definitely rooting for a brother, but has agreed to love a sister if that happens to be what we get. I have to admit at this point we are rooting for a boy...as the sister we have has hit an interesting stage. Like having a definite opinion on her shoes at the age of 2. Landon always wore what we picked as long as he could run fast in them. Elaine was not so easy to convince, in fact we came home from the shopping trip with no shoes.

On the other hand she has a very tender, sweet side that comes around too. Like how she likes to be rocked before naps and bedtime. It is not so much the rocking, but her request for me to sing "Bible" and "Skips". These songs are more commonly referred to as "Jesus Loves Me" and "Skip to My Lou". "Jesus Loves Me" being a classic sleepy song, and "Skip to My Lou" being one my Grandpa sang to me. I (like my Grandpa used to) have added a verse to "Skips".

Now its time to close those blue eyes,

Why I Have Been MIA

When I wrote my last post I thought I would be right back to blogging after we corrected the issue with our router. Little did I know I would be taking such a long break. Our new router was up and running very quickly, but I was not. In fact I have been barely keeping (and I mean barely keeping) our family afloat the last few weeks. Without hubby's help, the kids would have probably been looking for a new family. Did I have the stomach flu? No. Some kind of depression? No. I had morning sickness (in my case all day, mostly worse in the afternoon/evening sickness). That is right we are expecting! We are due very early October, and are beyond excited. So I just haven't had time to blog. What little time I have felt OK, I have been trying to keep a little order to our lives. If you could see my laundry room, you would run. So with that said I am having more of each day feeling somewhat normal, so as soon as I recapture the laundry room, toy closet, and a few other areas I plan to return to my blog. For now I will leave you with this scripture:

Teaching Tuesday: Decoupage Wooden Letters

I have a craft idea to share. I am still trying to make areas of our house feel homey, but we don't have money to buy lots of home decor things right now so I am trying to channel my creativity. The kitchen and main level bath have bead board on the walls. The previous owners had a nice collection of french country and antique like items hung with nails in this bead board. So we have been trying to slowly fill each spot. There is a little nail hanging above one side of the bathroom sink that has really been bugging me so I got the idea to make a letter C (for our last name) to hang from it. While shopping for those supplies I decided to make a letter E for my daughter's room. So I will share steps with you.

For the first letter I used just one piece of paper to cover the letter.

Trace letter on the back side of paper. Then cut out the letter.
Paint the sides and back of your letter.
I used craft spray glue to stick the paper to the letter.
Then I sanded the edges of the letter to make them smooth.
Then I gave the front of the letter a couple coats of Mod Podge.

For the second letter I used several papers to create a fun pattern.

Start by painting the sides and back of your letter.
Cut paper into strips.
Then using Mod Podge stick strips and torn pieces of paper onto the letter to create any pattern you like.
Once the paper has dried completely flip over the letter and using a sharp knife cut off the excess paper.
Then sand the edges.
Finish by giving the front of the letter a couple coats of Mod Podge.

While in the middle of my project I came across a post on Organize and Decorate Everything on do something very similar for a light switch so Elaine's light switch got a makeover too.

Little Details

I don't know about you but, I get so excited when the details in scripture speak loudly to me. This Sunday was one of those times. Our church is reading through the Bible chronologically and this past week we read the amazing story of Joseph, son of Jacob. His life and testimony has always spoken to me, that is one of the reasons why our son's middle name is Joseph. Joseph did not have an easy road of it, but sought God the whole way. This Sunday our pastor pointed out a small phrase at the beginning of a verse, that seemed to shout to me once my attention was drawn to it.

Genesis 37: 12 - 17
Now his brothers had gone to graze their father's flocks near Shechem, and Israel said to Joseph, "As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them." "Very well," he replied. So he said to him, "Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me." Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron. When Joseph arrived at Shechem, a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, "What are you looking for?" He replied, "I'm looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?" "They have moved on from here," the man answered. "I heard them say, 'Let's go to Dothan.' " So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan.

Joseph was not well liked by his brothers in fact shortly after he finds them they throw him in an empty cistern, with plans to leave him for dead. But as they are eating lunch merchants come by and they decide to sell him instead. So what was brought to my attention was how God had cared for Joseph by letting him wander awhile before leading him to his brothers. If Joseph had found his brothers sooner he would have been left for dead way before the merchants would come through. He would have never ended up in Egypt and eventually in the place to save not only the Egyptians from famine, but also his long lost family. I am telling you, if you haven't read the story of Joseph, you need to. It starts in Genesis 37. You can read it here.

I have been experiencing a rough spot in my role as mama for the past two days, I think it has something to do with my son refusing to nap and waking his little sister up way early from her naps with his noisy restlessness. Yet I remember that God is in each little detail of our lives...even if it feels like you are wandering around only to eventually be left for dead. He is right there to pull it all together.

Teaching Tuesday: Super Easy Guacamole

Our family loves Mexican food. 4 out of 7 days (maybe more) we eat something with at least a Mexican Flair. One of our favorite meals is Taco Salads. We use ground turkey instead of ground beef and often forgo any chips, so not only is it tasty it is a healthy option too. A must have for our taco salads is Homemade Guacamole. Which is also a great health food with the good kind of fats from the Avocado. It is really great for brain development in little ones. Guacamole was one of the first foods both our kiddos ate. So for today I have a recipe for really yummy Guacamole.

Super Easy Guacamole

Avocado

1/4 tsp salt per avocado

2 T salsa per avocado

3/4 tsp garlic powder per avocado

1/2 tsp lime or lemon juice per avocado

Optional: Chopped cilantro, chopped onion

Place all the ingredients in the food processor and blend until smooth.

Tips:

This is very easy to double, triple, etc. just get more avocados.
Finding a very ripe avocado is the key to good guacamole. The avocado should feel soft to the touch and the skin should be dark in color.
Feel free to adjust the above ingredients to fit your taste. For example we always use a little more salt, lime over lemon juice, and include cilantro but not the chopped onion.
A trick my husband learned from a neighbor when he lived in El Paso, TX is to put the pit (seed) back into the bowl with the guacamole to keep it from turning brown so quick. You can't make guacamole in advance as it browns quite quickly, but when you put in the pit it does seem to lengthen the life span.

I missed church but I got the message...

Last week I was not able to go to church as I was home caring for my niece and her very sick mommy. My sister in law had driven 3 hours to our house on Thursday so we could all drive to a family wedding, but then became very ill. We didn't make it to the wedding and instead spent the weekend praying health would return soon. My niece didn't sleep well, and therefore neither did I. By Sunday night I was exhausted, but a good friend encouraged me to get to small group. Then my husband got in on it and insisted it was what I needed. They were right. I love my small group, and I always enjoy their company. At group it was discussed that at church our pastor had talked about how God blesses us and in turn we can be a blessing to others. It helped me see the past few days in a new light. It had been a weekend of blessings. I blessed my sis in law by caring for my niece while she was too sick to care for her and by caring for her as well. My mom and grandma blessed me by taking my two kiddos so the house would be quiet and I wouldn't be so stretched. My good friend Shawna made my family a big pot of soup and helped me get to small group (in more ways then one). A teenage daughter of a family in our small group watched the kids so I could go to group. I could go on...

So even though I didn't "hear" the message last Sunday at church, I think I got it.

Teaching Tuesday: Adding Ribbon to an Apron

Today I am going to share how I added detail to a very simple denim apron. This was a Christmas gift for my mom.

First I covered the table with a heavy towel to create a large "ironing board".
Then I ironed the apron so I would not have any bumps under my ribbon.
Then I decided where I wanted the ribbon and measured (no ruler, just stretched it out and cut it the appropriate length).
Then I sealed the ends of the ribbon using a match. Just take your ribbon and move the end slowly through the flame. If you haven't tried that before you might want to use a test ribbon the first time so you get an idea of the timing.
Next I "measured" the stitch witchery the same length as the ribbon. (I decided that I was not ready to count on my stitches to be that straight, so I went with a no sew method).

Place your ribbon on top of the stitch witchery and iron, following the directions that came with your stitch witchery.

This was a very simple project, and I was pleased with the results. I am thinking about using this method to personalize canvas bags Landon and Elaine can use for their library books. I'll be sure to let you know how that goes.

Thankful Thursday

This week's list is short and sweet. The kids and I are headed to a wedding this weekend so I have lots of packing to do.

Friends that are not only fun to hang out with but also point me back to life's purpose of glorifying our Creator.
Seeing my children enjoy each others company. This isn't a given so when it happens it is a real treat.
Having the diaper fairy visit our house (aka Grandma showing up with diapers).
Christian Music stations to listen to in the car.
Having my husband off work every 6th week.

Teaching Tuesday: Waiting

I have decided to add a post topic that will reoccur each week on my blog. As you may have guessed from the title it is Teaching Tuesday. As a teacher by trade, I still love to help others learn something new so I thought this would be a great theme for me. I also know that I am still being taught each day by my kids, my friends, my family, my husband, and ultimately my God. So at times Teaching Tuesday will include what I have been taught recently. In fact that is just what you will find here today.

Have you ever felt like you were in a waiting period? In between two events...just waiting for the upswing? That is how I feel right now. After loosing our baby in July of last year I have felt very much like I am in a holding pattern. Not fully embracing life as it is now, just looking ahead to what I hope will be in the near future. As I posted around Thanksgiving, I have recently been experiencing peace in my situation. Yet once again God has taught me something. Resting in his timing is what He calls me too, but there is also work to be done in this time in between. For instance working to reestablish my exercise routine. At the time I became pregnant with Elaine (and really throughout my pregnancy) I was eating healthy and exercise was a very established part of my week. Since her birth it has not gone completely to the wayside but it has definitely not taken the priority it should. All this to say that I will be getting to work during this time in between. Of course healthy eating and exercise is just a small part of His plan for this time. I am a work in progress and I need this time to be what he created me to be.

Thankful Thursday

Once again I have so many things to be thankful for today.

Here are just a few of them:

Snow - I know it causes some inconveniences, but it gave the kids and I a completely uninterrupted day, which without snow would have been interrupted.
My new Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer - My husband and I had a stand mixer we bought with gift cards from our wedding. It will be 10 years old in June. It worked great for several years, but after our doggy chewed the cord it was never quite the same. My husband repaired the cord, but for some reason it only had one speed...super sonic fast. So when I tried to use it, flour would fly out all over the surrounding area. This Christmas my mom surprised me with a new one. Since Christmas I have already made a batch of my family's favorite muffins (Chunky Monkey), whole wheat chocolate chip cookies (for the freezer), a new muffin recipe, and later today I plan to make brownies from scratch.
A warm house - It may not be quite as warm as others, but I know there are many that are not as warm as mine.
Toys - Yes, even though I spend a lot of time reminding my children to pick them, share them, or treat them nice, I am still thankful they have them to play with especially on a day like today.
God's Word - As I am reading the Bible chronologically this year, I have already been reminded how intricate scripture is and how it is woven together so perfectly. It is truly amazing.

Happy New Year

I love a new start. When I was a classroom teacher, one of my favorite things about my career was that it was full of fresh starts. Each day, each week, each month, each grading period, each semester, each school year was a time for a fresh start. So I still look at my life as several cycles that piece together. So I create fresh starts for myself. Of course a natural time for a fresh start is a new year. After all the holiday happenings, which included missed naps and way too much junk food, we are in desperate need for a fresh start. Our fresh start is starting today. It includes momma laying out clothes and preparing for the day last night, waking early to get started before the kiddos (which around here is hard to do), serving a healthy breakfast, hiding any leftover Christmas candy and goodies, getting to the Y early, having some learning time before lunch, naps right on time, cleaning the house, swim lessons, and having a healthy home cooked meal for supper, and spending time with God throughout the day. That is the plan for the first day of our fresh start. I will have to let you know how our fresh start went...so far so good.

What is even more comforting to me then the fresh starts I create for myself? The one God created for me when he sent Jesus to wipe the slate clean. That is a fresh start I could never create for myself, yet I need it more then anything else. That truth is the only thing that makes my "fresh starts" worth it. Because as we all know fresh starts only lasts so long, then our fallen world and sin nature get in the way. So I cling to the fact that God created a fresh start for me.

Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

Car Seat Safety

Yes you read that right, and yes I admit that it seems like an odd post to finish this year out, but it is something that has been on my mind lately. I run into a lot of parents that don't seem to understand how car seats work, then I hear statistics about how many children die or are injured in car accidents because their seat was not installed or used properly.

This awesome site I found states this:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of kids in age groups 1-14. Safe Kids USA says motor vehicle crashes are the #1 cause of unintentional injury-related death for all children 14 and under. While some crashes are unsurvivable, over 57% of deaths for children 0-15 were because the child was unrestrained. Many more were improperly restrained. Nationally, the misuse rate for child safety seats is over 80% and as high as 95% in some areas. The good news is that correct use of car seats and boosters does save lives. Infant seats have been shown to reduce fatal injury by 71%, and toddler seats by 54%.

So I wanted to point out a few basic "rules" and also point you to some other places to get good information.

One point to remember before we begin, is that just like seat belt laws car seat laws can vary from state to state, but I am going to try to present the most safe (and law abiding) guidelines. If you have any doubts that your car seat is installed properly you can usually contact your sheriffs department and they will do a safety check. Our hospital actually had someone that could check ours and we did that before our first child was born. We learned lots of invaluable information from her.

With all that said here are few mistakes I see parents make:

1. Turn their children from rear facing to forward facing too soon. The basic rule is that a child must be AT LEAST one year of age AND 20 pounds in weight. Not one or the other but both a year and 20 lbs. But something most parents don't realize is that the safest way for your child (actually even adults) to ride in a vehicle is rear facing. Check out this site for lots of good information on extended rear-facing something I plan to do when are blessed with another baby.

2. Using backless boosters before the child is ready. I am talking about the little booster seats that basically just position the car seat belt. They are very appealing since they can be moved from one vehicle to the next easily. When I looked at one at the store it was not allowed for anyone under 4. There are also height and weight regulations. The child should meet the age and size requirements. Keeping your child in a 5 point harness as long as they can is the best option. Read the information that came with your car seat. We purchased a convertible car seat that has a 5 point harness that can be used up to 65 pounds!

3. Using car seats that are too old. Car Seats expire - You can usually find the expiration date on the back of the seat. This is especially important when looking at borrowing one from a friend. As the plastic ages it becomes more prone to cracks so it would be less protective in a crash. Usually the seats have a 6 year usage before they expire. The same can be said of car seats that have been in a crash. Depending on the accident the seat may have sustained damages that will make it less able to keep your child safe.

4. Leaving the retainer clip too low on the child in a 5 high point harness. Keep the retainer clip at armpit level on the child. Only one finger should fit between the clip and your child's chest. The straps should not drape over the child's shoulders. I often see straps so loose the child could probably be pulled out. I realize that tighter straps may not be as comfortable, but to me safety is more important. Also if you keep the straps tighter they will eventually get used to it.

5. Leaving the seat too loosely strapped to the vehicle. Make sure the seat moves less than one inch when pulled at the base. When installing the seat, place your knee in the seat to add weight. You really should not be able to wiggle the seat around when it is installed properly.

6. Allowing your child to wear winter coats in the car seat. Most coats should not be worn in car seats as they reduce the effectiveness and can cause the child to overheat. Great information can be found here.

7. Also it is often recommended that the carrier bar on infant car seat/carriers be pushed down into the horizontal position while driving. This is stated in most user manuals. Just reread yours to be sure you are using your seat the way it was designed. Some newer seats are fine either way. In older seats the bar can crack when left up and cause injury.

8. I guess the biggest thing is just not reading the manual that came with your seat. Each car seat has specific instructions. So please read the users manual and don't assume it is the same as another seat you have. If you have lost the manual most of them can be found online now.

The Stockings are Hung...Finally

Notice I said "hung" and not "done". There is still some finishing work (like the lining in the contrast material), but they are hung by the fire with care. I think even Landon was beginning to worry we would have no stockings this year. Remember way back here when I mentioned sewing stockings. It actually began before that post, when I opened up my husband's grandmother's old singer sewing machine. Then after giving myself a quick lesson from the manual, and drawing from my 4-H years, I began sewing stockings. I actually have 6 almost finished. I want to be prepared for either a girl or boy addition to the family. The girls in the family have the fun red print and the boys have the festive green. Even though I will not be posting any close up pictures, I a little proud to have stockings I crafted hanging by the fire.

It has been over a week since my last post as our house was hit hard by the flu bug. The children are very stir crazy, but I want to be sure not to share any germs so close to Christmas (or anytime). So we decided to get artsy. They made some masterpieces to add to the gifts under the tree for our loved ones. Here are some pictures of them at work. It is amazing what toddler paints and glitter glue can do for the soul.
